Wendy Shay is a popular Ghanaian Afropop and Afrobeats singer who calls herself the “Queen of Ghana Music” and has been giving Ghanaians good music since 2018. She is very hard-working in her music career and has won several awards for her excellent work in the music industry. She is someone whose name cannot be left out when mentioning the five best female artists in Ghana.

In March 2021, she was named one of the Top 30 Most Influential Women in Music by the 3Music Awards Women’s Brunch. BIRTH AND FAMILY BACKGROUND

Wendy Shay as she is popularly known in the entertainment industry is called Wendy Asiamah Addo, as the name given to her by her parents at birth. Wendy Shay was born on February 20, 1996, to Mr. & Mrs. Addo in Accra, a suburb of the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. Wendy Shay is the first of four children, two girls, and two boys. Unfortunately, she faced the passing away of her father at the very young age of 2 years. Wendy’s passion for music developed shortly after losing her father.

 

HOMETOWN

Wendy shay is an Akan who comes from Obo Kwahu in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

 

EDUCATION

The Ghanaian singer received her elementary education at the Morning Star School and St Martin de Porres in Accra. She later relocated to Stuttgart, Germany with her three siblings where she continued her education from grade 7 (JHS 1). She also attended a music school in Bernhausen in Germany.

Wendy Shay received training overseas as a Nurse for her profession where she worked as a Midwife in the clinical field. She practiced midwifery as a profession overseas until she relocated back to Ghana to pursue her music career.

 

MUSIC CAREER

She was introduced into the Ghanaian music industry by Rufftown Records Manager Bullet and signed in January 2018 after the untimely death of her label colleague Popular Ebony Reigns.

To the surprise of many Ghanaians, Bullet and Wendy met by chance while attending an event in Accra some time past. Although Wendy Shay knew exactly who he was especially as far as the music industry is concerned, they only exchanged pleasantries upon meeting at the event. According to Wendy Shay in an interview, it was only later after their meeting at the event when Bullet reached out to her about getting into the music industry as he noticed her unique voice.

This marked a transformative journey of her music career. Wendy Shay released her debut single “Uber Driver” on June 1, 2018, which brought her into the limelight. Her entry into the Ghanaian music industry met with heavy criticisms from some Ghanaians who believe that the Rufftown Records Manager, Bullet was quick to introduce her as a “replacement” for the much loved late Ebony Reigns.

Some people bashed her on social media and some popular comments among the bashing comments include “You Can Never Be like Our Queen Ebony” and “Stop copying the late Ebony” but she developed a tough skin through all the troubles and she didn’t let any of those get to her.

Wendy Shay has graced many stages with her performances. She has performed at the RTP awards 2018, BF Suma Connect 18 concert, and the Miss Ghana 2018 finals among several events. Wendy Shay has an album “Shay on You” and singles that include; ‘bedroom commando’, “astalavista”, “the boy is mine”, “shay on you” and many others.

 

ENSTOOLMENT

Wendy Shay was recently enstooled as the Ahenemba Hemaa of Gomoa Afransi in the Central Region of Ghana with the stool name, Queen Ewurabena Ofosuhemaa Shay 1.

 

MARITAL STATUS

According to Wendy Shay, she is not married, neither is she involved in any romantic relationship for now. Wendy Shay has been quiet about her relationship status until rumors emerged that she was dating some colleague Ghanaian musicians like Kwame Eugene, Shatta Wale, and her Manager Bullet among others. But all of these are just mere allegations and she subdued the rumors when she posted photos of herself with an unknown man sharing what seemed like a “couple moment”. That made many Ghanaians come to the conclusion that these two were dating based on the nature of the photos.

In 2020, she came out and said she was single and ready to mingle. She also described the type of man she wanted. According to the musician, she did not have an ideal man and that the man she wants should be God-fearing. He should also share the same vision with her and not be stingy.

Wendy Shay is a brand ambassador for the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) in Ghana.

Despite being in the Ghanaian music industry for a few years, Wendy Shay has attracted and won several awards and received many nominations for her brilliance in music. The top awards she has won since 2018 include;
