#1. Elmina Castle

Elmina Castle

Formerly known as São Jorge da Mina (St. George of the Mine), the Elmina Castle was erected by the Portuguese in 1482 and it is the oldest European building still in existence.

The castle was established as a slave trade settlement for the Portuguese but it was later seized by the Dutch from the Portuguese in 1637 until 1871 when the British Empire took over.

The castle is a popular historical site and a major filming location for Werner Herzog’s Cobra Verde and it is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

#2. Cape Coast Castle

The Cape Coast Castle was built by Swedish traders for trade in timber and gold but was later used in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. In 1653, Hendrik Carloff ordered for the first timber construction to be built on the site for the Swedish Africa Company which was then named Carolusborg after King Charles X of Sweden.

However, the site was later rebuilt using stone and it was seized by the Danes in April 1663 but the British Empire took over from the Danes in 1664 and rebuilt it the late 18th century. In 1844, it became the seat of the colonial Government of the British Gold Coast.

#3. Kakum National Park

Kakum National Park is also in the Central Region of Ghana. The park is rich in butterflies, birds, African grey parrots and hornbills and the most exciting part is it has a Canopy Walkway, suspended 30 meters above the ground, provides treetop views of the forest.

The park is also a home to endangered mammals such as forest elephants, bongo antelopes and primates like the Diana monkey.

#4. Fort Victoria

This fort was formerly named after English Governor Phipps, its initial constructor as ‘Phipp’s Tower’ but it was later renamed Fort Victoria after Queen Victoria of Great Britain.

It can be located on a hill on the western part of the Cape Coast township and was used as an outlook post for signalling purposes. The fort overlooks both the Atlantic Ocean and Cape Coast town.

#5. Busua

Busua is small resort and fishing village in the Ahanta West District of the Western Region in Ghana, about 30 kilometers west of the regional capital, Sekondi-Takoradi. It is known for the long Busua Beach, with strong Atlantic surf.

Its beachfront is lined with hotels and seafood restaurants. East of Busua, on a hill behind the village of Butre, is the Dutch-built Fort Batenstein, with coastal views from its bastions.
