United States-born Ghanaian Virgil Abloh is the new head of Luis Vuitton’s Men’s Wear. This role makes him the first black to hold such a high profile position at the top French designing firm.
He joins the illustrious list with the likes of the legendary Ozwald Boateng who was the designer for Givenchy and Olivier Rousteing who was the creative director at Balmain as the prominent blacks that have held creative roles at these big fashion houses.
The 37-year old Abloh cut his teeth in the fashion industry with his street-wear label ‘Off-White’ and he is famously known for being the creative director of rap superstar Kanye West.
Abloh’s appointment is also a reflection of the increasing consumer-driven intermingling of the luxury and street wear sectors.
